Covenant Presbyterian Church - Charlotte, NC

Senior Pastor Transition

After 18 years of faithful leadership at Covenant, Senior Pastor Bob Henderson will retire in mid-September 2026. As we prepare for this important transition, Covenant has begun the thoughtful and intentional process that will lead to calling our next Senior Pastor.

Session has appointed a Transition Team to help guide the congregation through the months ahead, including identifying an Interim Senior Pastor and leading the Mission Study that will help Covenant reflect on who we are, where God is calling us, and what we hope for in our future. That work will ultimately prepare the way for the election of a Pastor Nominating Committee and the search for Covenant’s next Senior Pastor.

Throughout the transition, we will share updates on this webpage and in our weekly Windows on Covenant email and provide opportunities for the congregation to ask questions, offer input, and participate in shaping Covenant’s future together.

Celebrating Bob Henderson's Ministry

As Bob Henderson prepares to retire after 18 years at Covenant and 38 years in ministry, we have so much to celebrate and so much to be grateful for. In the weeks ahead, we invite you to join us in honoring Bob, Suzanne, and their family and celebrating the many ways Bob has faithfully served our church and community.

Join us on September 13

Join us for a special celebration beginning in the Sanctuary at 12:20 p.m. on Bob's last Sunday at Covenant. Through special music, speakers, photos, and videos, we’ll reflect on Bob’s ministry and his years at Covenant. Afterward, the celebration will continue with lunch, activities for children, and a few other surprises on the Green and throughout campus. While RSVPs are not required, they will help us plan accurately.

Contribute to a Love Offering for Bob

Covenant is collecting a love offering for Bob as an expression of our congregation’s gratitude for his many years of faithful ministry. If you would like to participate, you can contribute online, mail a check to the church office or place a check in the offering plate with a note indicating that the check is designated for the Love Offering. Financial gifts will remain anonymous and will be presented to Bob as a collective gift from the congregation. Contributions to the Love Offering will be reflected in year-end giving statements as a non-tax-deductible gift.

Share your gratitude and memories

Help us create a meaningful keepsake for Bob and Suzanne by sharing a brief note, favorite memory, or photo. Whether it’s a favorite story, a word of thanks, or a special moment you shared with Bob, we’d love to include it. These will be compiled into a special keepsake for the Hendersons to enjoy. Email your remembrance to Lynne Koeniger or drop it off at the Welcome Center front desk.

Looking Ahead

As we celebrate Bob’s ministry, Covenant is also preparing thoughtfully and intentionally for what comes next.
The transition process will include welcoming an Interim Senior Pastor, completing a Church Mission Study, electing a Pastor Nominating Committee, and ultimately calling Covenant’s next Senior Pastor. The process typically takes about two years from the beginning of the transition until a new Senior Pastor is in place. The current timeline is approximate and may shift as the process unfolds.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the congregation participate?

Yes. Congregational participation is an important part of the process. The congregation will elect the PNC and approve the call of the new Senior Pastor. The congregation also provides recommendations of members to serve on the PNC. Members of the congregation will participate in the Mission Study and have opportunities to share their input. The Transition Team also welcomes questions, ideas, hopes, and concerns throughout the transition.

What is a Mission Study?

A mission study is a comprehensive self-assessment that helps a church to discern its identity, future goals, and the needs of the surrounding community. Through various methods and instruments, similar to Covenant’s Envisioning process a few years ago, the church considers important questions: Who are we? Where are we? What is God calling us to do? And how will we move forward? At Covenant, the mission study process will be led by the Transition Committee and the Planning and Evaluation Committee. Once completed, the mission study report is presented to the Presbytery of Charlotte’s Committee on Ministry for approval.

What is a Pastor Nominating Committee?

A Pastor Nominating Committee, or PNC, is a group of Covenant members elected by the congregation to conduct the search for our next Senior Pastor. Using the Mission Study and Ministry Discernment Profile as a foundation, the PNC will prayerfully identify and consider candidates and ultimately recommend one candidate to the congregation. The congregation then votes on whether to call that person as Covenant’s next Senior Pastor.

What is an Interim Senior Pastor?

The goal of this position is to cultivate an atmosphere in which staff, members, and friends of Covenant Presbyterian Church continue to pursue and embrace our vision. The Interim Senior Pastor will provide pastoral leadership, spiritual care, and administrative oversight while helping the church maintain stability and momentum. This will be accomplished primarily through leadership with staff, Session, and the congregation at large.
