Highland Renaissance Academy

Our CMS Partner School

Covenant's special partnership with Highland continues to lift up teachers and students by providing school supplies, reading buddies, teacher appreciation brunches and more. Read below for the many ways to get involved with Highland Renaissance Academy, our CMS partner school, located just north of uptown at 125 W. Craighead Road. We are staying fluid to meet the needs of the school and comply with CMS guidelines on volunteers during the 2021-22 school year. Connect with mission & outreach director Lucy Crain, for more information.

Lift up Children Returning to School

Help students at Highland Renaissance Academy and The Mezzanine on Freedom start the school year feeling prepared, excited and confident, knowing that here at Covenant, we’ve got their backs.

Each fall, thanks to donations from our members, Covenant provides 200 backpacks for Highland students filled with supplies for the academic year ahead. This year, we're assembling bags for children at The Mezzanine on Freedom, too. We’re collecting supplies now through August 13, and on Sunday, August 22, all are invited to a special Blessing of the Backpacks for students, teachers and families embarking on the new school year.

The backpacks are in, so now, we just need your help filling them!
There are 2 easy ways to donate:
  1. Order supplies through the Amazon Wishlist for delivery directly to Covenant.
  2. Shop the supply list on your own and drop off at the Welcome Center by August 13.

Read, Roar, Soar!  Read with a 3rd Grader

When: Volunteer with the group once a month for an hour. No prep work required.
What you can do: You'll be in a classroom with other volunteers to help children select books and read with the class.

Kindergarten Tutoring

When: First week of February until Spring Break (9-10 weeks), Tuesday or Thursday mornings for 1 hour (time to be determined by HRA)
What you can do: One-on-one tutoring with 3 kindergarten students (20 minutes each, the same students each week) working on sight vocabulary and reading. Tutors work on beginning sight words by using word cards, writing the words, tracing words, etc. In reading, tutor reads a simple, patterned book to student, tutor & student read together, and then student reads alone.

Highland Heroes Teacher Appreciation Brunch

When: Once a month; drop supplies off at the church any time.
What you can do: Simply contribute food, drinks, flowers or a note of encouragement. Drop them off in the Fellowship Hall bin (perishables in Room in the Inn fridge in kitchen) and a team of volunteers will deliver and set up at the school.

Summer Camp Buddies

When: Stay tuned for 2020 summer session dates.
What you can do: Support a Highland student who will spend a week at YMCA's Camp Harrison.

Freedom School

When you open books, you open doors. Freedom Schools summer programs give children three resources needed to develop their potential and inspire a love of reading and learning – literacy skills, character strengths and a community that believes in them. Covenant supports a Freedom School site at Highland Renaissance Academy serving 60 children in grades K-8.  Learn more here.
