Covers Cuts from
United Way
Covenant
Commits Funds to Uptown Shelter

Increasing economic distress is taking
its toll on the streets of Charlotte. Recently, the
United Way announced its funding cuts to local agencies, one
of which is the Uptown Shelter.
The
Uptown Shelter offers 268 beds in its Emergency Shelter
area and faced a $29,000 reduction in its funding for that
ministry alone.
Senior Minister Bob Henderson is pleased to
announce that Covenant has already responded to this need,
and has committed an additional $29,000 to the Uptown
Shelter so that it can continue to provide all 268 beds in
its Emergency Shelter area.
"Times like these reveal the character of a
community," Henderson said, "and I'm grateful to be part of
a faith community that takes seriously our relationship to
the poor. My thanks go to all of you for your strong support
of Covenant's mission, and to Janet Delery, Chair of the
Division of Mission."
"We were given an opportunity to make an
impactful contribution to meet the needs of the poor in our
community," Delery said. "By acting quickly, perhaps we can
further our impact on the city by being a catalyst for
others and setting a standard of leadership." |

Vegetable Garden Project
Covenant
Youth, along with the Preschool and the Division of
Education, have planted a vegetable garden. Our hope is to learn
about gardening and food, study our connection to God
through nature, and get dirty while having a great
time. The food will be used in a variety of ways
depending on yield: taken home and eaten by the
gardeners and their families for Sunday dinner, given to
the preschool for educational snacks, used as part of
the meal for Covenant Connection, or donated to
Friendship Trays.
Congregation members are encouraged
to get involved through donating supplies (old equipment
that is still in working condition is perfect) and
donating their time working in the garden. If you are
interested, please contact
Henry
Owen, interim high school youth director
(704-804-7563).
