Book talk on The Last Ballad
On Wednesday, May 15, our resident bibliophile, Janet Gleeson will share her thoughts on Wiley Cash’s book The Last Ballad. Join us in Room 201 of the Education Wing at 10:30 for snacks and fellowship. Our speaker will start at 11:00. Come to learn more about the history of the Loray Mill strike in preparation for our trip to Dallas and Gastonia to see exhibits related to the strike.
Loray Mill exhibit
On Wednesday, May 22, we will travel to the Gaston County Museum in Dallas for a guided tour of the Loray Mill Exhibit. We will have lunch at O’Charley’s (free pie Wednesday!!) and then visit the Alfred C. Kessell History Center in the restored Loray Mill building. Although it failed in its immediate goals, the 1929 strike was considered very successful in a lasting way; it caused an immense controversy which gave the labor movement momentum, propelling it toward national development. We will leave Covenant at 9:30 a.m. and be back around 4:00 p.m. RSVP required by May 15 to the parish nurse at 704-804-7561 or firstname.lastname@example.org. There is no cost for the tours, lunch on your own at O’Charley’s. Come learn more about this important period in our local and national history.
