Summer Calendar 2023

Some congregations slow down in the summer, but not ours! We continue learning and growing together as a community in Christ. Below is a list of opportunities for all ages. 

Adult Gatherings & Spiritual Growth

Sunday Mornings

Worship in the Sanctuary

Exploration of Christian Hospitality
June through August we'll explore Christian hospitality in the Bible, as well as at and beyond Covenant. Meet in Fellowship Hall or on Zoom and bring a friend.
10:30 - 11:00 a.m. Fellowship Time
June 11 through Labor Day we'll enjoy fellowship, coffee and light refreshments between services in the Welcome Center.

Front Porch Book Chats

To complement our Sunday Education, we're  offering Front Porch Book Chats hosted by Covenant members.
 Join us for fellowship and conversation about what it means to be a “gladly inviting” community of faith.

New Writer Series

June 7: Patricia Joslin
 Joslin will read from her new book of poetry I’ll Buy Flowers Again Tomorrow: Poems of Loss and Healing, which pays homage to her beloved husband who died of cancer in 2015. Meet in Fellowship Hall at 6:30 p.m. Enjoy light refreshments and stay for a book signing.

Stephen Ministry Summer Programs

TOPIC: Feeding Your Body, Mind and Soul
Attend this fascinating series of public talks in Fellowship Hall at 6:30 p.m. on the following Wednesdays:  
June 21: Cheryl Hoover, author of Healthy Living for a Sharper Mind. 
July 19: Suzanne Henderson, consultant for Interfaith America’s Faith and Health Sector.
August 16: Kevin Harper, Covenant’s Recreation Ministry Director.

Grief Support

June 21, July 26 and August 23
Join a group of compassionate hearts at 11:30 a.m. in the Parlor for a time of support and sharing for anyone grieving a loss. Contact Katherine Kerr with questions.

Singing Events for All Ages

Sing with Covenant Summer Choir: Interested in singing in worship but can't commit to rehearsals? Summer Choir is for you! From June 11 until August 20, this group meets each Sunday at 10:00 a.m. to prepare for the 11:00 a.m. service.

July 23 Alumni Day: If you’re a former/retired Covenant Choir member, call your singing buddies and return for a reunion morning.

August 6 Intergenerational Choir Day: Gather your family members and friends of all ages. The music for this day can be learned quickly and sung easily by young and old alike. 

August 20 College and Young Adult Day: Did you sing in choir as a high school or college student? Dust off your skills and encourage your friends to join you in choir for the day.

Outreach & Volunteer Opportunities

Serving Breakfast at Men's Shelter

May 24, June 28 and July 26 
From 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., Covenant provides the cook team and meal service to guests of the Roof Above Levine Men's Shelter. Learn more »

Vacation Bible School Volunteers

August 7-11
Over 100 children will take part in Covenant’s Vacation Bible School, which depends on adult and youth volunteers to make this event happen. Learn more and sign up.

Freedom School Volunteers

June through July
Covenant sponsors Freedom School site at Highland Renaissance Academy, serving 80 children in grades K-8. Contact Casey Unger or sign up here.

Summer Sunday School Volunteers

Sundays:  June 4 through August 27
Our Kindergarten through fifth graders are invited to attend a combined Power Up program during the 9:30 Sunday School hour in room 207 on the second floor. During this time, children will participate in a game, Bible story, and enjoy fellowship together. In order to make this a fun experience, we need your help! Sign up here

Middle & High School Youth Events

Sundays: Middle and High School Youth Programs
Middle and High School Youth will continue as usual this summer. On Sunday nights, Youth will meet from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. Sunday School takes place from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. in the middle and high school youth rooms.  On the first Sunday of each month, Youth attend worship with Youth leaders at the
9:30 a.m. service.  

High School Summer Mission Trip: June 11- 17
We’re headed to Avery County to build with Habitat for Humanity and impact a community, grow closer together and cool off in a beautiful waterfall.

Middle School Summer Mission Trip: June 18-23 
All middle schoolers are invited to join us in Memphis for a week of praying, serving and learning with one another.

High School Conference: Montreat July 9-15
Save your place for an incredible week at Montreat! We’ll sing, dance, play, make friends, eat, worship, hike and maybe even sleep!

Montreat Middle School Conference: July 19-23 
All middle schoolers are invited to join us in Tennessee for faith and fellowship at the annual Montreat Middle School Conference.

Summer Sundays with Children’s Ministry

Sunday Mornings
Children ages K-5th grade are encouraged to worship with their families through the "Time With Young Disciples" at 9:30 a.m. worship. Following the "Time With Young Disciples" a shepherd will guide them to their classes where we will learn the stories of people in the Bible. During 11:00 a.m. worship families K-5th grade are encouraged to worship together.

Sunday Evenings: Open Picnic Table 
On Sunday evenings all families are invited to Open Picnic Table from 5:30-7:00 p.m. Bring a picnic dinner and we provide the dessert. Each month we focus on a special way to practice being Jesus’ disciples:
June: Creating Community – Book club on Wonder
July: Serving Others – Family-friendly mission project
August: Praying Together – Learn special prayers to say and learn to pray with our whole bodies.
K-2nd grades will meet together from 5:30-6:15 p.m. and 3rd-5th grade will meet together from 6:15-7:00 p.m. Picnics are encouraged outside from 5:30-7:00 p.m. and all ages are welcome, as we will have fun games for little ones as well.

Creative Camp

Half-day for ages K-5, providing a creative outlet through art and lego building.  

Eco Camp

Ages K-5th grade, teaching about our environment with fun projects, guest speakers and goodies.

Sports Camp

Kids K-5 will learn about all different kinds of sports throughout this busy, interactive week.

Imagination Station

Ages K-5 will visit Discovery Place, the Mint Museum, the Raptor Center and the Nature Museum.
