I used to do this thing where I put God in a box. God fit so nicely into my box labeled, “Sunday.” God fit well underneath my bedside table, where my prayers journals, Bible and devotional books were stacked. And God fit really well on mission trips, especially during “Devotions.” That was a big box.
Then one day, or maybe one summer (I’m not quite sure), God started getting too big for all my boxes. Or, maybe God had always been too big for my boxes, I just hadn’t noticed the overflow.
One of my favorite authors, Barbara Brown Taylor, explores this idea in her book, “An Altar in the World.” Taylor writes that when searching for holiness, “the last place most people look is right under their feet, in the everyday activities, accidents, and encounters of their lives.”
This summer, let’s look together. Let’s find the holiness beneath out feet. In the everyday activities, accidents, and encounters of our lives.
