Please welcome Claire Lowrance as the newest full-time addition to Covenant's staff as Associate Youth Director. Claire is a graduate of Queens University (psychology major), where she also spent a year abroad at the University of Zurich studying German and British Literature. She has an extensive background in working with youth, most recently as an intern in the youth ministry program at Hopewell Presbyterian Church in Huntersville, North Carolina. There, she worked with all ages of youth developing Bible study programs, teaching Sunday school, and leading high school devotions and recreational activities. Hopewell is also Claire's home church.
Claire will work with our middle school youth, primarily 6th and 7th graders, and share responsibilities with Quest confirmation starting in the Fall. When asked how she feels about working with middle schoolers, Claire responded, "I really respond to this age group. They are usually the forgotten grades in school and out. I love this age group because they are really walking the line between being children and being teenagers, all the while carrying so much potential for leadership and compassion. I have been so moved by middle schoolers and what they are capable of, so much more than they are usually allowed to do. The thought of being able to come in and rejuvenate a program like Covenant's is just a dream come true to me, and is exactly where I want to be."
We also asked Claire what drew her to Covenant. She responded, "As I have interviewed around area churches, I really felt comfortable at Covenant, coming from a smaller church and wanting to gain more experience working in a large church, I was really conscious of the size of the congregation. What was most impressive was even though Covenant is a large and wealthy church, all the people I have met have been the most welcoming, down-to-earth folks. Other church emphasized the wealth of their congregation over the people and the relationships with youth. I was attracted to the way Neil (Myer, youth ministries director) explained that building relationships with the congregation and with the kids is the most important thing. The first day I walked into my interview with the search committee, I felt at home."
