Help the Children-At-Risk of Charlotte
Invest your time in the life of a child through our Hearts for Highland program. This is our congregational ministry to the children at Highland Renaissance Academy, a Charlotte-Mecklenburg elementary school serving many low-income families. How can you help?
• Tutor a child
• Volunteer with the Read, Roar, Soar book ministry providing free books to all 3rd graders at Highland
• Provide scholarship assistance to the After School Enrichment Program
Be a one time guest reader at Highland Renaissance Academy. If a child falls in love with books, you won't be able to keep them from learning to read. Bring your favorite book, borrow one from the library or ask the teacher to choose. Covenant has committed to filling 10 story time slots. Funny character voices not required, but are encouraged.
Volunteer to be a summer camp parent. Love summer camp? The campfires? The s'mores? The bugs? If you value the transformative effect that summer camp can have on a child's social skills and self esteem, join us as a camp parent for the students of Highland Renaissance Academy. You will help make sure the family has accumulated everything your student needs for camp, wave to them as they get on and off the bus, and maybe write them a letter or two so they know someone is thinking about them while they are away.
Volunteer at Freedom School. Freedom Schools is a summer, literacy-rich program that combines reading, conflict resolution and social action into an enriching program that promotes social, cultural, and historical awareness. Freedom Schools need story readers, chaperones, activity leaders, shoppers, and organizers. We also are looking for people who are computer savvy, have the gift of hospitality, or simply are looking for ministry opportunities for their families during the long days of summer. One-day or multi-day commitments are both needed. Most importantly, kids need relationships with loving adults who also love reading. A volunteer sign-up sheet is here.
We're also collecting supplies needed for the children's programs. Please bring any of the following items to the Recreation Wing: shoe boxes, paper towel rolls, coat hangers, glass jars with lids, magazines, newspapers, gallon ziplic bags, plastic grocery bags and almost any sort of school supplies.
